This project is funded by NASA's Advanced Information Systems and Technology (AIST) program. It aims to advance machine learning for Earth Science problems. Specifically, we will develop new technologies that address two major challenges facing machine learning for broad Earth Science applications—spatial heterogeneity, where satellite observations and their relationships to the prediction targets vary over space, and the limited and highly localized nature of ground-truth data that are needed to train the algorithms.

This project will conduct one of the most systematic tests to date of the welfare effects of altering information environments by decreasing exposure to untrustworthy sources. Researchers will encourage social media users to change the composition of the accounts they follow and measure the effect of this intervention on real-world behavior. This design will provide a building block for future research on the effects of online information exposure on offline behavior.

By analyzing a large dataset of criminal cases, the team will investigate the predictability of pretrial risk and the court's decision-making. The research will provide insights to improve policy and practice, reducing unnecessary detention while ensuring public safety.

The long-term data record (LTDR) from the Advanced Very High-Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) provides daily surface reflectance with global coverage from the 1980s to present day, making it a unique source of information for the study of land surface properties and their long-term dynamics. Surface reflectance is a critical input for the generation of products such as vegetation indices, albedo, and land cover. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to quantify its uncertainties to better understand how they might propagate into downstream products.
