RERC on Universal Interface and Information Technology Access

This Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center (RERC) was focused on accessibility of information and communication technologies (ICT) for persons across disability types and socio-economic levels. A major objective of the RERC was to move the concept of a Global Public Inclusive Infrastructure (GPII) to field implementations in order to test the efficacy and viability of the concept with real-world conditions and users. This was accomplished by implementation of GPII auto-personalization software (now called Morphic) on computers used by patrons in public libraries, with a focus on providing cost-effective ways of serving users with disabilities. The RERC also developed and tested a decision support tool based on the GPII Unified Listing. The purpose of this tool is to provide users and clinicians with a new capability for tracking and selecting ever-changing ICT accessibility solutions, including information on both assistive technologies and access features built into mainstream technologies. The RERC also continued work to motivate and facilitate access built directly into mainstream products through its technology transfer program and research support of industry standards groups and governmental agencies working on accessibility standards.
