ALA Lecture Series: “What Comes Next: Libraries, Advocacy, and Public Policy—A Conversation with ALA President Cindy Hohl”

UMD students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends—join us for this year’s American Library Association (ALA) Speaker Series event. Advocacy can be a part of every stage of your career! A reception with light refreshments will be held from 5:00-6:00 PM (ESJ, 1st Floor Concourse) and will be followed by the lecture at 6:00 PM (ESJ 1215). Registration is required.

Description:

You are invited to a special discussion with ALA President Cindy Hohl on April 17th. President Hohl will share timely insights into what is coming next for public and academic libraries in the U.S., tools for advocacy and connecting to elected officials, and guidance to build a coalition of movers and shakers. The conversation will open to students, educators, and practitioners from various career stages to share their experiences in this area.

Cindy Hohl

Cindy Hohl, director of policy analysis and operational support at Kansas City (Mo.) Public Library is the 2024-2025 president of the American Library Association (ALA).

Hohl is past president of the American Indian Library Association and is an active member of other ALA affiliates, including the Asian/Pacific American Librarians Association, Black Caucus of ALA, Chinese American Librarians Association, and REFORMA: The National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking. Hohl is also a member of several round tables: Intellectual Freedom Round Table, Library Research Round Table, and Social Responsibilities Round Table.

Hohl holds a Bachelor of Science in Organization Management and Leadership from Friends University, a Master of Library and Information Science from Wayne State University, and a Master of Business Administration from Baker University.
