Dr. Buntain’s work examines how people use online information spaces during moments of uncertainty, particularly in times of crisis, conflict, and political or social unrest. His research goals are to create an information ecosystem that keeps us better informed, connected, and resilient to manipulation during these moments. Much of Dr. Buntain’s work is in computational social science and examines impacts of content moderation, online political engagement, and how AI alters the information environment. His parallel work in crisis informatics focuses on AI-driven methods for extracting and summarizing critical information for emergency response personnel. He is also a research affiliate for NYU’s Center for Social Media and Politics, and his work in these areas has been covered by the New York Times, Washington Post, WIRED, Business Insider, and NBC.
