Human-Like Coaching for Home PT Exercises
BeneKinetic is developing an AI coach that mimics the expertise and interaction of a physical therapist during rehabilitation exercises. Using machine vision, the AI tracks user movements in real time, offering immediate feedback to improve form and progress. The goal is to enhance adherence to physical therapy, ultimately reducing medical costs and improving outcomes. The project, in collaboration with Dr. Galina Reitz, involves iterative testing, including Wizard of Oz simulations, to refine communication strategies.
The research aims to determine the factors involved that are key to improving the human-like qualities of the AI coach by testing and optimizing the type, timing, style, and delivery of feedback, communication style and fostering emotional engagement through personalized, human-like interaction. By combining memory of past performance with motivational messaging, the AI coach helps users stay on track toward their goals. The algorithms will be refined based on user feedback, with a focus on tailoring responses to individual needs and emotional states. The final phase will evaluate the AI coach’s impact on user adherence, physical performance, and satisfaction through quantitative and qualitative assessments. The results will guide recommendations on the most effective strategies to foster long-term user engagement. This AI coach can revolutionize home-based PT by replicating the benefits of human physical therapy in a scalable, cost-effective manner.
