Dr. Brooke Liu’s research investigates how risk communication can motivate people to successfully respond to hazards. Much of her research focuses on severe weather and infectious disease crisis communication in digital and social media contexts.
Liu’s research has been funded by government agencies such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the Department of Homeland Security, the National Science Foundation, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Liu is the co-founder and editor of the first journal dedicated to crisis and risk communication research: the Journal of International Crisis and Risk Communication Research. Liu has served as a member of the Food and Drug Administration’s Risk Communication Advisory Committee and on several National Academy of Sciences committees examining risk communication systems. She also has delivered risk communication training for a variety of stakeholders including the Department of Homeland Security, the National Weather Service, and the Australian Institute for Disaster Resilience.
