Our Research Coordinator, Luis Cortes, joined us from the CDC in January 2019. Even though he is a relative newcomer to the iSchool, he’s no stranger thanks to the variety of responsibilities his role entails. Several of those support the iSchool in increasing its research capabilities, including aiding Dr. Susan Winter in programs that increase research impact, managing the Research Improvement Grant funding program, and collecting and disseminating our research accomplishments. As the iSchool’s IRB Liaison, Luis provides support and oversight for iSchool research that involves human subjects and makes sure that it adheres to UMD policy. He has also been indispensable in his operational support of the Year of Data Science Inauguration Event. Luckily for us all, Luis takes pride in fostering positive workplace environments and was able to organize the Ice Cream Social, which he also enjoyed attending, especially seeing students, faculty, and staff relax and have fun. In his spare time, Luis stays busy, enjoying films, musicals, and watching sports, especially local hockey and soccer. If you need tips and ideas about how to get fit and eat right, Luis is definitely your go-to: he’s always on the lookout for new recipes, techniques, and workouts to try.
