Join us for the American Library Association (ALA) and University of Maryland College of Information Studies (iSchool) Lecture Series.  This annual lecture series invites the current ALA president, Patricia (Patty) Wong, to speak to us on current issues and the future of American libraries.  The event will be moderated by the Chair of ALA’s Committee on Legislation, Joe Thompson, who received his MLS from the UMD iSchool.

Patricia (Patty) Wong

Patricia (Patty) Wong is the first Asian American to serve as president of the American Library Association (ALA). An active ALA member for 37 years, Wong has served several terms as an at-large councilor (1996–2007, 2012–2014) and as a California Chapter councilor (2015–2017). She is an active member of the Association of Library Service to Children, Public Library Association, United for Libraries, Young Adult Library Services Association, the Social Responsibilities Round Table, Ethnic and Multicultural Information Exchange Round Table, and the Rainbow Round Table. Her work in managing change, equity and diversity, youth development, developing joint ventures and collaborations between public libraries and community agencies, and fundraising has been published in a number of journals, conference proceedings, and edited collections. She holds a BA in Women’s Studies and an MLIS, both from the University of California at Berkeley.

Joseph Thompson

Joseph Thompson is the Director of Public Services for the Carroll County Public Library (Maryland) and has previously worked in library administration at the Harford County Public Library and Western Maryland Regional Library. He is currently serving as the chair of the American Library Association’s Committee on Legislation. His past professional experience includes serving as president of the Maryland Library Association and president of the Reference and User Services Association (RUSA). He received his MLS in 2001 from the College of Information Studies at the University of Maryland.
