Tangible Thinking: How Physical Computing Brings Abstract Ideas into the Real World

Event Start Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2025 - 10:30 am

Event End Date: Tuesday, April 15, 2025 - 11:30 am

Location: Hornbake 2119

Abstract: This teaching demonstration explores how physical computing, particularly with microcontrollers like Arduino, can bring abstract ideas into the real world through interactive prototypes. Drawing from my projects and case studies, I’ll demonstrate how designers can use microcontrollers to create tangible proof-of-concept experiences. This hands-on approach helps designers build deeper connections with complex topics and facilitates meaningful dialogue with diverse audiences. Participants will leave with practical strategies for integrating physical computing into educational environments, gaining insight into how interactivity encourages critical thinking, creativity, and thoughtful reflection about technology and society.

Bio: Parth Pawar is a designer and creative technologist who works at the intersection of people, technology, and play. He holds a Master’s degree from NYU’s Interactive Telecommunications Program (ITP), where he explored how modularity, interaction, and hands-on tools can empower users and spark new ideas. Parth has designed interactive experiences, led user research, and collaborated with teams across disciplines to turn creative concepts into real-world projects. He has taught workshops on Arduino, prototyping, and interactive design, consistently focusing on making technology accessible, inclusive, and thought-provoking.
