Event Description: The annual HCIL symposium brings together top HCI thinkers and influencers from academia and industry for presentations on innovative research on UX, accessibility, and other HCI topics; demonstrations of new technologies; and discussions by key leaders in the HCI field. Join us on May 29, 2026, as we celebrate 43 years of groundbreaking HCI research. This year’s presentations and panels highlight ongoing research happening in the lab. HCIL members will share their work on human-centered AI, accessibility, usable privacy & security, health informatics, and more.
Attend in person to pick up some swag, see all the presentations and panels, check out the demos, and network with other attendees at lunch, coffee breaks, and the poster session/reception. If you can’t make it to campus that day, register to attend virtually to watch the talks live and participate in Q&A sessions. All registrants will have access to a recording of the talks after the event, as well as an event program with abstracts for each talk.

About the HCIL: The Human-Computer Interaction Lab (HCIL), launched in 1983 at the University of Maryland, has a rich history of transforming the experience people have with new technologies. From understanding user needs to developing and evaluating these technologies, the lab’s faculty, staff, and students have been leading HCI research for more than 40 years. HCIL is jointly supported by the College of Information Studies (INFO) and the University of Maryland Institute for Advanced Computer Studies (UMIACS). It currently includes more than 80 faculty and students from across campus.
