Empowering Students to Teach and Lead in Computing

The Peer Learning in Computing course–the foundation of C3’s peer-assisted computing program–will launch in Fall 2025. It will focus on  training the next generation of computing tutors and mentors at the University of Maryland. Designed for undergraduate students with a strong interest in computing and teaching, this 3-credit course prepares participants to support their peers in programming, problem-solving, and computational thinking.

By completing this course, students will:

  • Develop expertise in peer-assisted learning and effective tutoring techniques;
  • Gain hands-on experience by observing and conducting real tutoring sessions;
  • Strengthen their own computing skills in a collaborative environment;
  • Build leadership, communication, and problem-solving abilities; and
  • Become eligible for paid peer tutor positions at C3, beginning in Spring 2026, working 5–10 hours per week.

What You’ll Learn

The Peer Learning in Computing course blends educational theory with practical tutoring experience, equipping students to work effectively with learners at different skill levels.

Course Topics Include:

  • Tutoring Strategies: Direct vs. indirect tutoring, cognitive scaffolding, and motivational scaffolding
  • Computational Thinking: Teaching problem decomposition, abstraction, and algorithm development
  • Programming Support: Helping students debug, understand syntax, and apply computational logic
  • Pedagogical Skills: Managing tutoring sessions, guiding students through coding challenges, and fostering independent learning
  • Access in Computing: Strategies to support students from diverse backgrounds and learning styles

Students will engage in guided observations, reflective discussions, and real-world tutoring sessions, ensuring they are well-prepared to mentor their peers.

Real-World Experience & Career Benefits
