Developing a Science Outcomes Inventory and Implementation Framework for Citizen Science Project Evaluation

To prepare the research community and federal agency staff to evaluate the science outcomes of citizen science projects, the proposed work will update, refine, and complete the Science Outcomes Inventory drafted by the DataONE Public Participation in Scientific Research Working Group in 2013. The draft evaluation tool provides a comprehensive list of 33 science products for planning and evaluation and a set of 32 organizationally-focused items for contextualization. We will also develop an empirically-based framework for implementation through iterative pilot testing with two citizen science projects. To communicate results, two peer-reviewed manuscripts will be submitted for publication in targeted journals, one on the Science Outcomes Inventory, and one on an implementation framework. In parallel, we will disseminate results to multiple audiences through at least three presentations delivered at conferences and to USGS staff and federal partners involved in citizen science, both for validation and dissemination purposes.
