Nominate Your Students for iSchool Awards!

 

The Awards Committee welcomes nominations from the iSchool faculty for two Dean’s Awards, as well as the Laurence B. Heilprin Award, and the Simmona Simmons Best Student Paper on Diversity Award. Course projects and papers completed during the Spring 2017, Summer 2017, or Fall 2017 semesters are eligible for nomination. We are also soliciting nominations for the new Gloria Davidson Excellence in School Librarianship Award. Details for each of the awards are provided below:

 

Dean’s Award for an Outstanding iSchool Project  

The Dean’s Award for an Outstanding iSchool Project will be presented to an iSchool student or a group of students (which includes at least one iSchool student) for an outstanding design or development project completed for an iSchool course. Projects must be nominated by a faculty member(s) and must represent outstanding work that furthers understanding by offering new insights into development or design or displays excellence in applying existing state-of-the-art methods and knowledge.

 

Dean’s Award for an Outstanding iSchool Doctoral Student Paper

The Dean’s Award for an Outstanding iSchool Doctoral Student Paper will be presented to a doctoral student who has had an outstanding full-length paper accepted and/or published in a peer-reviewed journal or conference between January 2017 and December 2017. While faculty members may be co-authors on these papers, the doctoral student MUST be the first author. Papers must be nominated by faculty for this award. Please note that a paper may only be nominated once for this award.

 

Laurence B. Heilprin Award

The Laurence B. Heilprin Award will be presented to an iSchool student or a group of students (which includes at least one iSchool student) for an outstanding paper on a topic in library and information science which has been written for an iSchool course. Papers must be nominated by faculty and must represent outstanding work that furthers understanding by offering new insights, incorporating original research, and/or analyzing existing information in new ways.

 

Simmona Simmons Best Student Paper on Diversity Award

The Simmona Simmons Best Student Paper on Diversity Award will be presented to a graduate student or a group of graduate students for an outstanding paper which has been written for an iSchool course and which focuses on any aspect(s) of diversity. The iSchool embraces a broad definition of diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, gender, disability, age, socioeconomic status, education, geography, language, literacy, sexual orientation, and national origin, among other factors. Papers must be nominated by faculty and must represent outstanding work that furthers understanding by offering new insights on diversity issues, incorporating original research, and/or analyzing existing information in new ways.

 

Gloria Davidson Excellence in School Librarianship Award

The Gloria Davidson Excellence in School Librarianship Award will be presented to an outstanding student in our School Library specialization. School library students can be nominated by any faculty member for this award. The purpose of this award is to recognize one student who has made particularly innovative and/or impactful contributions within a school library environment.

 

Nomination procedure

 

A. For all awards except the Gloria Davidson Excellence in School Librarianship Award:

Faculty members should submit only exemplary papers and/or projects for consideration by the Awards Committee. Please submit nominations to ischoolawards@umd.edu. For each nominated paper or project, please include the following items in your nomination email:

1. Award Recommended
2. Course Number
3. Instructor of Record
4. Course Term
5. Student Name(s)
6. Student Email Address(es)
7. Project/Paper Title
8. Was there an external client or were there external stakeholders (i.e. outside of the class) to whom this project was geared? (Yes or No)
9. What makes this submission worthy of consideration?

For the Dean’s Award for an Outstanding iSchool Doctoral Student Paper, please also include the following information:

10. Journal/Conference name:
11. Accepted date:
12. Acceptance rate (if known):
13. Date of journal publication/date of conference:

 

Please also either provide the Web address of the work (if any) or attach a copy (.doc, .docx, or .pdf) of the work.

 

B. For the Gloria Davidson Excellence in School Librarianship Award:

Any faculty member is invited to nominate outstanding school library students for consideration for this award. Please submit nominations to ischoolawards@umd.edu. For each student you would like to nominate, please include the following information:

1.      Your name
2.      Student’s name
3.      Student Email Address(es)
4.      Description of how long you have known this student and in what capacity/capacities
5.      Description of why you feel this student deserves this award

 

Deadline for Nominations

Complete nominations must be submitted no later than Thursday, April 26 at 11:59PM EST. Incomplete nominations will not be reviewed.

 

Award Notification and Presentation

Awards will be presented at the iSchool Spring 2018 Commencement Ceremony on Monday, May 21, 2018.
