Meet CASCI: A Closer Look at the Center for the Advanced Study of Communities and Information

Meet the Center for the Advanced Study of Communities and Information (CASCI)! CASCI is a semi-formal organization and group which brings together the iSchool and broader community to discuss research topics surrounding any types of communities and information. The group usually meets in 2116 HBK from 11:00am-12:00pm on Tuesdays per the posted schedule for the semester: https://casci.umd.edu/2018/01/30/spring-2018-casci-activity-schedule/

Think of the organization as a common space for discussion with the structured activities of CASCI Talks, CASCI reading group, and CASCI Peer review. A larger vision for the CASCI group is to build relationships and bring attention to work done by fellow researchers in the iSchool and to attract the overlapping interests of groups who are at Maryland and local institutions.
  • CASCI Talks invite speakers who address timely and relevant research to the interests of Information and the broader community. This talk series is a formal speaker series in parallel with the HCIL brown bag lunch. Schedule: https://casci.umd.edu/casci-events-2/casci-talks/spring-2018-talk-schedule/
  • CASCI Reading Group meets alternating Tuesdays at 11:00 am from the CASCI talks. The aim of the reading group is to bring attention to papers that provide foundational knowledge that bridge the community interests and expand the horizons. Any person can propose a paper to read while anyone can lead a paper they choose or select a paper from the suggested papers list.  Schedule: https://casci.umd.edu/casci-events-2/casci-reading-group/spring-2018-casci-reading-group-schedule/
  • CASCI Peer Review is a monthly call for papers which are in progress that are seeking peer feedback through an informal sign up spreadsheet. This is a complementary ongoing peer review to the HCIL paper review sessions on CHI and InfoViz with a primary focus on journal papers. Two to three volunteers sign up per paper session this is sent out via the listsrv which can be joined by emailing CASCI@umd.edu
The structure of CASCI includes a Director (or co-director) with Senior Fellows and Junior Fellows which indicate interest in being part of CASCI. The junior fellows (PhD students) help organize the activities.
