    Position Offered: Summer Intern
    Overview of Summer Project: Each year, MCAEL collects data from adult ESOL provider organizations on their classes and learners, which is used for grant monitoring and program planning purposes, as well as to show impact to our funders and stakeholders.
    ​Specific tasks for this internship:

    • Help prepare raw FY20 learner demographic data for analysis, revising/refining existing macro developed for this purpose.
    • Develop visualizations using Tableau for key data points (esp. learner demographics) for MCAEL website and publications.
    • Research and recommend ways that MCAEL can support communications messaging using County data on income level, unemployment, digital access, etc.

    Position Offered: Marketing Intern
    Overview of Summer Project: Ardent is seeking motivated graduate students, law school students, and very talented upperclassmen who are experienced in technology policy, fintech and/or cybersecurity.This role will be best suited for students who are passionate about privacy and technology. The internship will total between 200-300 hours, and you will get to work out of the Ardent office in Catonsville and/or remotely over the summer, depending on the pandemic

    • Surveying and interviewing a variety of community members to better understand what draws users to our site and the quality of their experience once there
    • Developing recommendations for how to improve the user experience, and implementing recommendations where possible,
    • Optimizing current website content (including photos and design layouts) and widgets to increase page speed and attract visitors,
    • Connecting Google Analytics or a similar platform to track website traffic,
    • Creating featured members/events section on the homepage that can be easily edited
    • Making recommendations about the best way to create interactive opportunities for, visitors to leave comments, including in response to blogs or other posts;
    • Other website projects based on students’ interests and skills.

  • The Center for Early Childhood Education and Intervention (CECEI), College of Education at UMD
    Position Offered: Graduate Technology Research Assistant
    Overview of Summer Project: ​CECEI is seeking a Research Assistant who will primarily assist with an app project. The app is on iOS and Android and helps families connect with what their children are learning at school and offers activities and resources. This is a great opportunity to build your project portfolio and gain applied app development experience.
    Tasks include:

  • NFLC Langage Ladder App and Website UX Assessment, UMD
    Position Offered: Summer Intern​
    Overview of Summer Project: ​The main objective will be to improve the user experience, usability, and design of both the Language Ladder website and app by gathering and analyzing input from stakeholders, staff, usage logs (if available), and other feedback channels, and identifying areas for improvement, which may include overall product performance, customer satisfaction, task efficiency, site usability and ergonomics,branding, or interaction design issues.
    Deliverable:

    • Completing programming of in-development apps,
    • Launching apps, researching and implementing, improvements including user testing, and troubleshooting/maintenance. 
    • The ideal candidate has a strong Swift and java/Android development experience.

    Overview of Summer Project: ​ There are different projects like working on Product definition, market analysis, competitor analysis, roadmap, vision, technical architecture, marketing, sales, and financials.  ​Based on customer use cases from our pilots, additional work on researching customer target needs is needed to build on our themes of what business problems we can solve. Building out an instance on Knowledge that consists of key information about Sorcero, industries, customers, competitors, etc.UI/UX projects for the University of Maryland team. Could implement ways to visualize the "brain", ways to manage specifying tags in search or something in the no-code space. Help build/develop training programs for SMEs/Users. Develop course materials which will include quick start guides, an overview of AI-NLP, computer-based training modules, development of training videos. Help build a customer success interactive dashboard that will tie into our platform, reporting, hubspot, ticketing, and invoicing/billing.

    Position Offered: User Experience Design Assistant
    Overview of Summer Project: ​The project(s) will support PressDesk during a key transitional phase as we begin to integrate a payment gateway and new features including AI-assisted news discovery and other features. There will be an opportunity to provide feedback on existing user experiences. Overall, this project will specifically involve the student(s) directly engaging in experience design from marketing to potential customers to providing direct input and design for the in-app user experience and user interface design.     Position Offered: Intern
    Overview of Summer Project: ​ Food Mailers is a brand new company.  The final output of the project will be a target market selection and positioning strategy.  In a time when the restaurant industry is undergoing widespread disruptions, this project will be to analyze which types of restaurants would benefit most from direct mail marketing to their local area.  The student(s) will use both data-driven and primary research (talking to restaurant owners) approach to develop a basis for customer segmentation.

  • Cooperative Institute for Satellite Earth System Studies (CISESS)
    Position Offered: Summer Intern
    Overview of Summer Project: Our research team focuses on the detection and geolocation of lightning in thunderstorms using space-based satellite detectors, and ground-based radio antenna networks. We are currently working with 3 student interns (incoming first year undergraduates) who have built individual web pages that allow users to query our database, view real-time plots of data, and experiment with parameters in a clustering experiment. We need an individual to lead the design of a cohesive website to tie these three pages together with a fourth “home page” with links to data visualizations and training material. Our goal is to produce a professional looking and functional site that allows forecasters/researchers who use our data to assess data quality and access the data they need.

Internships can be a valuable way for iSchool students to gain experience and try out different career options prior to completion of their graduate program. The College of Information Studies works to build relationships and facilitate internship opportunities with both public and private sector organizations.

All iSchool graduate programs have a field study or internship component. For more information about your specific program's internship/field study requirements, please review your academic program handbook. Students are welcome to seek out an internship through our internal internship and field study databases or through their own networking. Contact your program coordinator for more information about these databases, or attend one of our (will be advertised on the program page when available).

  • The University of Maryland Libraries Research and Teaching Fellowship prepares MLIS graduate students to enter into a competitive academic job market. The scaffolded training program equips fellows with the skills and experience to perform entry-level public services functions including: information literacy instruction, research assistance, basic program assessment, and peer training. The fellowship goes beyond basic job responsibilities to prepare fellows to step into faculty roles by providing funding and support for professional development, including presentations, posters, and conferences; engaging in discussions about current literature with academic librarians through a monthly journal club; and the opportunity to lead a small scale research and assessment project of their choosing. Finally, it supports fellows through their job search processes by providing career readiness workshops, mentorship, and a supportive community of practice. This competitive program is open annually to four MLIS students. 100% of alums have gone on to receive offers from prestigious academic and research institutions. For more information about our past and current cohorts, Meet the Fellows.

  • The National Park Service has created many formalized archival internships for iSchool students to work both at the National Park Service in downtown DC as well as the National Capital Region park service in Landover, MD. Information about applying to these internships is sent through the current student listservs.

National organizations offer students and professionals the opportunity to meet people within their field, to exchange ideas, and to learn from experienced professionals. A wide variety of organizations exist, and students are encouraged to join those within their expected graduation specialties. Most organizations offer special, lower membership rates for students.

  • DC Analytics Meetup brings together people who are interested in analytics and how it's revolutionizing the world. Each month we gather to see presentations, demos and network with fellow analytics enthusiasts. Topics covered include big data analytics, predictive analytics, social media analytics, text analytics and much more. Come get involved in a community of likeminded peers and let's turn insights into action.
  • Data Science DC is a non-profit professional group that meets monthly to discuss diverse topics in predictive analytics, applied machine learning, statistical modeling, open data, and data visualization. Members are professionals, students, and others with a deep interest in these fields and related technologies. Meeting topics are varied and range from tutorials on basic concepts and their applications, to success stories from local practitioners, to discussions of tools, new technologies, and best practices. All are welcome -- to attend, to meet others, and to present their work!
  • Data Visualization DC is a non-profit professional group that meets monthly to discuss data visualization, data communication, infographics, exploratory data analysis, charts and graphs, perceptual psychology, and more! Our members are data journalists, data scientists, business intelligence professionals, and others who tell stories and persuade with data. Meeting topics are varied and range from tutorials on basic concepts and their applications, to success stories from local practitioners, to discussions of tools, new technologies, and best practices. All are welcome -- to attend, to meet others, and to present their work!

  • Tutorialspoint has easy-to-follow tutorials on major topics in programming and CS concepts, which you can cover in hours and literally be an expert in amongst your peers. It focuses on classes on Java, SQL, Python, C++, Android and much more.
  • Lynda.com is an online education company offering thousands of video courses in software, creative, and business skills. UMD students have unlimited access to watch the videos.
