MIM - Strategic Management of Information Concentration

The Strategic Management of Information Concentration is intended for those students who want to follow the “CIO” (Chief Information Officer) or general management path. This concentration is designed for professionals who require a strong understanding of the role of information and technology in the management and operation of the organization, but who themselves are not directly involved in the actual development of applications or systems.

The Strategic Management of Information concentration puts a heavy emphasis on courses that focus on both general and more specialized information management concepts.

The requirements to achieve the MIM degree with a concentration in Strategic Management of Information are:

a) Core courses (9 credits)
Three core Information Management (INFM) courses are required to be taken at the beginning of the program (among the first 18 credits of the program) since they are foundational:

  • INFM 600 Information Environments (3 credits)
  • INFM 603 Information Technology and Organizational Context (3 credits)
  • INFM 605 Users and Use Context (3 credits)
b) Specialized courses (15 credits)
The specialized required courses in the Strategic Management of Information Concentration are divided in two groups, the management and the technology courses:

Management Courses: Four strategic management courses (12 credits) are required to be completed in this concentration: three specific courses and one selected by the student
The following three management courses are required:

  • INFM 612 Management of Information Programs and Services (3 credits) *
  • INFM 620 Introduction to Strategic Information Management (3 credits) *
  • INFM 722 Copyright, Privacy and Security Issues in Digital Information (3 credits) *
The additional management course can be selected by the student between:

  • INFM 706 Project Management (3 credits)
  • INFM 720 Seminar in Strategic Information Management (3 credits)
  • INFM HHH Knowledge Management for Emergency Management (3 credits)
  • INFM 718A Seminar in Information for Decision Making (3 credits)
  • INFM 718P Information Policy (3 credits)
  • PUAF (Public Affairs) or BMGT (Business School) course(s) with permission (3 credits)
Technology courses: One advanced course in information technology (3 credits) is required in this concentration. This course can be selected by the student:

  • INFM 718B Building Human Computer Interface (3 credits)
  • INFM 718N Web Enabled Databases (3 credits)
  • INFM 718R Information Retrieval System (3 credits)
  • INFM AAA Content Management Systems
  • INFM BBB Digital Multimedia Design and Development
  • INFM DDD Development of Internet Applications
  • INFM 741 Social Computing Technologies and Applications
  • LBSC 793 Database Design
c) Applied courses (6 credits)
The Team Experience and Capstone projects are the required applied component in the program:

  • INFM 736 Information Management Team Experience (4 credits)
  • INFM 737 Solving Problems in Information Management (2 credits)
 d) Elective courses (6 credits)
The remaining six credits (6) can be selected by the student :

  • INFM 613 Systems Analysis and Planning

  • INFM 718J Communities of Practice - Online Communities
  • LBSC 680 Principles of Records and Information Management

  • Additional advanced technology course(s)
