Satisfying the employment demands of libraries, museums, and archives in the public sector and private industry, the program prepares students for archival and bibliographic research, archives management, curatorship, conservation, and public history interpretation through an interdisciplinary program of traditional historical methodology and cutting-edge archival and technology skills.
Program Requirements
Students earn both the MLS and the Master of Arts in History. The program requires 54 credit hours (a minimum of 24 hours from each department).
The course of study must meet iSchool's requirements and those described on the Archives, Records, and Information Management Program page. In the Department of History, students must satisfy the requirements for the Master of Arts in history, including the requirement to take the general seminar and two research seminars in the major field (e.g., U.S. , Modern Europe, East Asia , Latin America , Women & Gender, and others). The rest of the history courses are selected from the wide range of courses that the department offers. Offerings related to history, editing, historic preservation, and museum studies may be of particular interest. The courses remaining may come from either department, elsewhere in the University, or through the Consortium. Both the College of Information Studies and the Department of History offer a thesis option. For additional information on the MA thesis option in History, see: http://www.history.umd.edu/graduate/programs/ma/guidelines.html
Student Archivists at Maryland
Student Archivists at Maryland (SAM), the student chapter of Society of American Archivists (SAA), is a forum for students specializing in or interested in archives. The group tours repositories, hosts guest speakers, arranges other events, and operates an electronic discussion group.
Admissions
See Applying to the MLS Program . Opportunities for financial assistance, in the form of graduate assistantships and research grants, may be sought through the College of Information Studies and the Department of History. On- and off-campus employment opportunities are generally excellent for students in the HiLS dual-degree program.
