Dean of Learning Resources
Prince George's Community College
Academic Affairs Area, Learning Resources Division
I am a 1972 graduate of the College of Information Studies and for the past 33 years have worked as, first, a reference/cataloging librarian at University of Maryland Baltimore County and Coppin State College, and, then, as the director of the library at the Community College of Baltimore, Northern Virginia Community College, Montgomery College and now at Prince George's Community College (PGCC). My duties have included supervising the library, audiovisual services, distance learning, computer labs, and various college activities, such as the 50th anniversary celebration of the Brown v. Board of Education decision.
If I were to pick one thing of which I am most proud and from which I have received the greatest personal reward, it would be the Book Bridge Project. Annually, for the past 8 years a book is chosen to be read by not only the students, faculty and staff at PGCC, but also by local high school students, area businesses (such as PEPCO) and community members.
There are activities throughout the year such as lectures, film viewings, plays, and panel discussions held at the college and at the public library. Topics for these activities are taken from subjects raised in the books. The Book Bridge Project's culminating event is Author's Day where the writer comes to campus for the day. He/she meets with the Writer's Group, with students, does a reading from the work, signs books, and meets and greets at a reception. Some of the noted authors have been Toni Morrison, Esmeralda Santiago, Ben Carson and B. B. Moore Campbell.
My favorite author is Jane Austen, but my favorite book is Charles Dickens' Bleak House. "My lifelong love affair with books and reading continues unaffected by automation, computers, and all other forms of twentieth-century gadgetry." - Robert Downs
