Brief overview of my career development
In 1975 I joined the Computers in the Curriculum Project at Chelsea College, University of London. This was a national, highly innovative project to develop computer-based learning curricula for teaching science at university and senior high school.
In 1996 I moved to the USA and became Chair of Information Systems at University of Maryland Baltimore County for five and a half years. During this time we more than doubled the number of faculty members, revised our programs, developed a distance Masters program and increased our research productivity considerably. In January 2005 I moved to the University of Maryland at College Park to be Professor and Dean of the College of Information Studies.
2. Research and Scholarship
After completing my Ph.D. in 1985 my research focused on information systems, computer-mediated communication, human-computer interaction, distance education, and online communities. My current research is concerned with the design and management of online communities. I work with communities of practice, health, education, non-profit and knowledge communities.
My research addresses questions concerned with sociability and usability in online communities. I focus on three main research areas: (i) knowledge exchange, cross-cultural communication, empathy, trust, and etiquette online; (ii) why and how people participate, or do not participate; and (iii) heuristics and methods for developing, maintaining and evaluating online communities.

Preece, J. (2000) Online Communities: Designing Usability, Supporting Sociability. Chichester, UK: John Wiley & Sons. (439 pages)
This is one of the first comprehensive texts about online communities and it has been well reviewed. It was the first book to coherently bring together the sociability and usability issues in online community development.
Preece, J., Rogers, Y., Sharp, H.,
Benyon, D., Holland, S. & Carey, T. (1994) Human-Computer Interaction.
Wokingham, UK: Addison-Wesley. (775 pages)
This book was a leading text in HCI until Interaction Design was published in
2002. In the October 1994 issue of the SIGCHI Bulletin, Gary Perlman said in
his review: "Preece et al. have done for HCI what Pressman and Sommerville did
for software engineering in their widely used textbooks: they have digested
the research and practice and presented the material in a pedagogically sound
manner. ... it is the first [book] that fits the billing of a good textbook
for graduate and undergraduate use." p. 82. Seven years later in a review of
the top ten HCI books on Amazon Perlman still rated this book as number 8 with
the comment “the first real textbook in HCI - still useful”.

I have a broad range of teaching experience at different levels including: high school, undergraduate and graduate. I am also experience in developing curricula for face-to-face, technology enhanced and web-based distance education.
Classes that I have taught include: online communities (498, 698, 700, 800), communities of practice and online communities (700), seminar on communication (700), human-computer interaction (303), systems analysis and design (436, 636), research methods (graduate), technical writing and HCI (undergraduate), student projects (graduate), multimedia design (undergraduate & graduate).
I also get many requests for independent studies from Information Systems, Language Literacy and Culture, and Nursing Informatics students. Typically these students have attended my online communities classes and are attracted by the interdisciplinary nature of my work.
Distance Education Curriculum Development and Teaching
During the time that I was department chair at UMBC we created a new Online Masters Program in Information Systems. I developed a course on Interaction design (667) and the Capstone Project course (699) for this program.
At the Open University multi-media courses, comprising text, television, video, experimental kits, home computing, computer assisted learning, Internet and Web, are developed by teams of academics. I chaired several development teams, including the one that developed the first distance education course in human-computer interaction for professional students in 1990. I also authored and taught the following courses: project management (graduate), graduate project courses, human-computer interaction (graduate), fundamentals of computing (undergraduate), programming and programming languages (undergraduate), contemporary issues in education (undergraduate), educational computing (undergraduate and graduate), purpose and planning in the curriculum (undergraduate), science foundation course (undergraduate), awareness courses in educational computing (professional courses for teachers).

Chair of Information Systems Department at University of Maryland Baltimore County
During the five and half years that I was chair of the Information Systems Department at UMBC the department increased from eight tenured and tenure-track faculty to twenty, from two lecturers to nine, and from three staff and associate staff to five. We also had twenty-four part-time instructors.
One of my aims as department chair was to improve research productivity, which we began by making good hires at the junior level and also by creating the first named chair of Information Systems at UMBC. This enabled us to attract a talented senior person and shortly afterwards we appointed a second senior faculty member. With the help of these new hires we started to increase our sponsored research to around $1.5 - $2 million dollars per annum and created a foundation on which to build more sponsored research. We have also dramatically increased the number of journal and conference papers written each year. A new research center and research groups were also created. We also revised the Ph.D. program.
Other developments included restructuring the undergraduate and masters programs to make them more coherent and improve our academic standards. We created a new Masters program that is delivered through distance education and mounted an off-campus undergraduate program at Shady Grove Campus in Montgomery County. This began in fall 2001 and continues to grow.
By fall 2001 there were approximately 1500 undergraduate majors, 160 Masters students in the face-to-face program, 100 Masters students in the online program and 30 Ph.D. students. Typically we graduated 1-3 Ph.D. students each year.

External Course Validation and Examining at Other Universities
In Britain senior academics are asked to validate new courses for other universities and to externally examine existing courses. Terms of appointment are usually for three years. Examiners review Faculty’s curricula, grading and the standards of the students' work in order to ensure that comparable standards are adhered to across different institutions. Each validation or external examination normally takes 2-3 days.
