Graduate Assistantships

Only iSchool degree-seeking students are eligible for assistantships available through the college. Those assistantships, funded by the College and affiliated departments, are awarded through the Student Services Office.

iSchool students have also obtained assistantships through the UM Libraries and various administrative offices around campus.

Some on-campus assistantship positions are listed on the Human Resources’ Graduate Assistant Job Listings webpage.

Resident Life Assistantships, with the same benefits and either live-in or non-live-in positions, are available in limited numbers. For information, contact:

Department of Resident Life
Room 0109 Cecil Hall
University of Maryland
College Park, MD 20742
(301) 314-7598

Assistantships currently provide a stipend for a 9.5 month period and tuition remission for up to 10 credits per semester in exchange for 20 hours of work per week. Partial assistantships are also available.  The current stipend amount can be found in the Graduate Catalog.

Graduate Assistantship Application

To apply for assistantships, you will need to fill out the Application for Graduate Assistantship form. This form can be downloaded as a Word or PDF file.

Return it to the Student Services Office as early as possible prior to the semester you expect to be starting graduate studies. For further information about how to apply for a graduate assistantship, contact the Student Services Office .

Offer Letters
When a graduate assistantship assignment is made, a letter will be mailed from the Director of Student Services to the address you have on file. If you agree to the terms of the assistantship as stated in this letter, sign and return it to the Student Services Office as soon as possible.

Office/Mailbox Assignments
New Graduate Assistants (GAs) need to go to the Administrative Office (Hornbake 4105) to obtain keys to their offices and mailbox assignments. You should do this as soon as possible at the beginning of your first semester as a GA.

Insurance/Payroll Information
New GAs should also see Kathleen Fominaya in the Administrative Office (4105) as soon as possible regarding any questions they have about available insurance packages and special payroll needs such as direct deposit. The sooner you begin the paperwork for these, the quicker you'll be enrolled for insurance benefits and the faster your direct deposit request will be processed by your bank.
