Alumni Network Board
Victoria Wilder is a 2007 MLS graduate of the iSchool. She is serving as the 2016-2017 President of the iSchool Alumni Network, after finishing her tenure as the previous year's Vice Present and Programming Chair.She holds a B.A. from Wellesley College. While earning her MLS, Victoria was a graduate assistant for the University Libraries in Special Collections, performing original cataloging duties for the National Trust for Historic Preservation collection and working at the reference desk in Hornbake Library.
She currently works at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) on the campus of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Her duties include leading the customer service and technical documentation teams for the Unified Medical Language System (UMLS). The UMLS aggregates nearly 200 health and biomedical vocabularies to enable interoperability between computer systems.
Victoria's plans for the Network include fostering relationships between the board and current students, promoting the board's professional development grants for alumni, and bolstering the Network's fundraising capabilities.
Victoria (Tori) Weaver is a MIM alumna from the class of 2005. At such time, Tori was the Director of Information Technology for The Washington Post Company (TWPC) responsible for the IT operations and innovation within the corporate office and other business units. After her 19 year-long career with TWP, she decided to put her undergraduate degree in Business Management from Bowie State University (2002) and her Master’s of Information Management from UMD (2005) to excellent use and became an entrepreneur. In 2006, Tori formed a Business and IT consulting company assisting private firms and government (most notably the Department of State, Department of the Interior, and Department of Defense) with strategic IT goals, objectives, planning, and execution. “Information is everywhere but if you don’t know how to manage it effectively, you are at a disadvantage. The training and preparation I received at the iSchool was priceless”. When Tori is not running her company or networking, she finds time for volunteering at UrbanEd.org – a technology non-profit and offering to speak to/mentor youth as well as students (including iSchool Capstone students). “I look for ways to always be of service and am thrilled to have this opportunity to sit on the alumni board and serve my alma mater”.
Hi, my name is Paul Chasen and I am a 2011 UMD iSchool graduate. I am the Statewide Coordinator of Maryland AskUsNow!, http://www.askusnow.info, Maryland libraries' free, 24/7, virtual reference service available to Maryland residents, students in Maryland schools and institutions, and customers who stumble across the service while surfing the net. My responsibilities include marketing the service in cooperation with public, academic, and special partner libraries; training librarians on virtual reference; and managing the IMLS, LSTA grant that funds the service. Prior to coordinating Maryland AskUsNow!, I was the Grants Collection Manager, a specialized collection that provides fundraising and nonprofit management resources, at the Enoch Pratt Free Library/Maryland State Library Resource Center (SLRC); a Virtual Reference Intern at Maryland AskUsNow!; and a Circulation Manager at the Baltimore County Public Library. Outside of my career, I enjoy traveling and eating great food with family and friends; being a competitive, long-distance runner; and supporting housing and hospice organizations that have deeply impacted my life.
Megan Fratta graduated with her MLS in 2016. She currently works as a contract librarian at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill’s Health Sciences Library where she provides reference, research, and instructional support. Prior to working at UNC she was an Associate Fellow at the National Library of Medicine in Bethesda, MD. She is excited to serve as the Young Alumni Officer and to assist in efforts to engage alumni out-of-state.
Carleton Jackson is the Head of Library Media Services, University of Maryland Libraries. He manages a library and staff specializing in physical and digital media collections, providing services to access collections directly and electronically. These services also now include media discovery and technology assistance, curricular planning, media integration and video production. Facilities and services are available to students, faculty and staff for the use of visual media as an integral part of coursework, research and publishing.
Carleton has worked on mediagraphic projects sponsored by the Rockerfeller Foundation (National Video Resources' "Viewing Race" and "The Sixties"), The Mellon Foundation and NYU ("Video at Risk"), digital video cu-ration projects with information provider ProQuest, new electronic models of university archival media resources with Footage Access, and local community digital media services with The Creative Edge Collaborative of Prince Georges County Maryland. Carleton is active in the American Library Association (and a founding member of the ALA Video Round Table), Association of College & Research Libraries and CCUMC: Leadership in Media and Academic Technology and other organizations. He has served on various advisory boards of these organizations and those of The National Media Market, Alexander Street Press. He is a member of the American Film institute, Society for Cinema and Media Studies, International Documentary Association and the International Association for Media and History. He has coordinated programs for AFI SilverDocs International Documentary Conference and judged video awards for International Documentary Association, Birmingham International Educational Film Festival and ALA Notable Videos.
Kristina Elliott is a 2014 MLS alumna. She is currently an Associate Information Specialist for ClinicalTrials.gov, part of the National Library of Medicine/National Institutes of Health. She is the first librarian on the ClinicalTrials.gov staff, and brings skills related to information organization, dissemination, outreach, and user services to the world’s largest registry and results database of clinical trials.
After graduating from the iSchool, she was a 2015-2016 National Library of Medicine Associate Fellow, and worked on several projects related to information policy, legislation, and access.
While earning her MLS, Kristina was a Graduate Assistant in the iSchool. Before beginning the program, she worked for a software company as a researcher, writer, and editor. She holds a B.A. in English from the University of Maryland, College Park.
Kristina is continually impressed with the work her fellow Maryland iSchool alumni are doing, and she hopes to ignite the Alumni Network with an active base of innovative recent alumni who are reinventing the title of “information professional."
Wanda Whitney heads the User Services Unit in the Public Services Division of the National Library of Medicine (NLM) where she manages the first-level customer service operations for the library, supporting Web sites such as PubMed, ClinicalTrials.gov, and MedlinePlus. She also represents NLM on the Language Access Plan (LAP) Steering Committee, which works to improves access to NIH services for people with limited English proficiency. She has a life-long interest in ensuring everyone has access to information.
She received her PhD in Spanish in 1998 from Temple University and her Masters in Library Science from the University of Maryland College Park in 2006. Before transitioning her career from teaching to medical librarianship, she taught at secondary boarding schools, as well as the University of Delaware and Delaware State University.
Diana D’Agostino is the Manager of the Research Support Center for a federal government agency. In addition to managing staff, maintaining the library’s print collection/subscription resources/acquisitions, fostering relationships with vendors, and tackling whatever might come up next, Diana provides scientific and technological research support to clients for implementation in programs supporting the U.S. military around the world.
Prior to earning her MLS with a focus on life-long information access, Diana received a B.A. in East Asian Studies from Oberlin College and taught English at Yunnan University in Kunming, China, for two years. While at the iSchool, Diana was privileged to participate in the study abroad program led by Dr. Ann Weeks at the International Youth Library in Munich, Germany. She also volunteered for several years with Lubuto Library Partners, founded by fellow alumna Jane Kinney Meyers, which provides an expanding network of locally-run library and education centers for street children across the nation of Zambia.
Diana has also worked in database management for a trade association representing the consumer packaged goods industry and at the National Archives and Records Administration. In 2017, Diana’s chapter on informal mentorship across ages and industries, “It Takes a Village: Mentorship from All Sides,” was included in the book Librarian as Mentor: Grow, Discover, and Inspire, published by Mission Bell Media.
Preeti Lakhole is a Data Analyst in the Risk & Compliance Systems & Analytics practice at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP. She completed her Master's degree in Information Management at the iSchool in May 2015. Preeti completed her Bachelor's in Computer Science from University of Mumbai, India in 2012 after which she spent a year volunteering to teach underprivileged children in the slums of Mumbai. Preeti has continued her support for underprivileged children by sponsoring a child's health and education. She is passionate about cross country road trips, community activities and music.
Preeti believes that she has reinvented herself at the iSchool which prepared her for embarking on a successful career.She is committed to being a part of this endeavor and would like to demonstrate pride and connection to iSchool.
Alumni Network Committees
The Fundraising Committee of the iSchool Alumni Network will develop strategies to increase alumni giving that will support iSchool Alumni activities and iSchool development efforts.
The Membership Committee of the Alumni Network is charged with recruitment and retention of Alumni Association members by extending invitations, reviewing and updating benefits of membership, and advising the iSchool Alumni Chapter board on recruitment materials.
The Nominating Committee of the Alumni Network will identify and recruit volunteers to serve on the Board of Directors.
The Program Committee will assist the Alumni Network board in developing, branding, and marketing programming for alumni, including social, educational, and professional development activities held on campus, off-campus, and online.
Social Media & Communications Committee
The Social Media & Communications Committee assists the Alumni Network in outreach efforts to Network members and non-Network alumni, and works with the iSchool on alumni communications strategies.
Sponsorship and Awards Committee
The Sponsorship and Awards Committee is charged with reviewing applications for scholarships, financial support for student groups and the iSchool, and professional development grants for alumni, and making recommendations to the Alumni Network board.
