Rebecca Follman Master's Thesis Defense
When: Mon Apr 22, 2013 10am to 11am
EDT
Where: 4113 Hornbake Building, South Wing
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: TITLE: From Someone Who Has Been There: Information Seeking in Mentoring ABSTRACT: For tenure-track faculty, mentoring can be an important source of information needed for success in their new career and institution. Although information behavior is central to the mentoring relationship, mentoring has not yet been looked at through an information behavior lens. This study sought to begin to fill this gap by investigating mentees’ perceptions regarding how mentees and mentors share information, what motivates mentees to seek information, what barriers exist to their information seeking, and what contributes to a successful mentoring relationship. Data were collected using a Web survey and follow-up interviews, both of which explored the mentoring experiences of tenure-track faculty at a major mid-Atlantic research university. Study findings suggest that the information seeking of mentees is akin to browsing in a document collection, that mentees’ information needs are fluid and highly contextualized, and that there are affective barriers to information seeking within the context of the mentoring relationship. COMMITTEE: Dr. Beth St. Jean, College of Information Studies (Chair) Dr. Diane Barlow, College of Information Studies Dr. Paul Jaeger, College of Information Studies

Chad Doran Proposal Defense
When: Mon Apr 22, 2013 9am to 10am
EDT
Where: Room 2116 Hornbake South Wing
Event Status: confirmed
Event Description: Chad Doran will present and defend his dissertation proposal, titled "Examination of the Management of Social Media Records at a Federal Executive Agency," on April 22nd at 9:00 AM in Room 2116 Hornbake South Wing. All are welcome to attend the public presentation and ask questions. Abstract: Maintaining and preserving records has long been regarded as essential to the functioning of government and to related open government initiatives in particular. However, the literature identifies specific technology and policy-related challenges of managing social media records. While there exists, in the literature, a limited examination, via interviews, on the management of social media content in the federal agencies, a close analysis is needed to identify how social media records are being managed in practice. This study will provide an in-depth analysis of this issue within a federal executive agency, utilizing a mixed-methods approach consisting of survey administration, document review, and follow-up interviews. This study will present theoretical as well as practical implications. On the theoretical level, the study is expected to contribute to records management theory, application of information models, and the definition of the record in the social media environment. On the practical level, this research will provide recommendations to industry and federal agencies for the development of standards, guidance, and technologies for the management and preservation of social media records. Dissertation proposal committee: Chair: John Bertot, iSchool Co-chair: Michael Kurtz, iSchool Katie Shilton, iSchool Ricki Punzalan, iSchool Dean's Representative: Kate Stewart, School of Business
